Unit 7 Cultural relics Period 1 Warming up and speaking

Teaching Aims:
1.     Knowledge Aims:
Ss can master the following phrases and expressions:
Cultural , cultural relic, pyramid, Egypt, Stonehenge, statue
2.     Ability Aims:
1)      Through talking and listening, Ss can understand the listening material and improve their listening and speaking ability.
2)      Through discussion and talking, Ss can use English to express their opinions on social problems.
3.     Emotional Aims :
1)      Through talking about some cultural relics, Ss can truly appreciate the significance of them and at the same time, realize the importance of protecting cultural relics.
2)       Ss can be aware of the great value of the cultural relics in China, and have a deeper love for their mother country.
Teaching Important Points:
1.     How to improve Ss’ listening ability.
2.     Talk about ways to protect cultural relics.
Teaching Difficult Points:
1.     Improve Ss’ speaking ability by talking some cultural relics
2.     Improve Ss’ listening comprehension and getting certain information by listening to some materials.
Teaching Methods:  
1.     Listening method to improve the Ss’ listening ability.
2.     Talking method to enable the Ss to express themselves freely.

tapes, tape-recorder, computer, pictures, projector
Time:45mins
Teaching Procedures
Step I. Leading in (1)
Activity: Have a free talk with Ss about some cultural relics that you have ever seen
Questions:
1.     Which cultural relics did you see?
2.     Why do you think it is famous?
3.     What do you know about the ancient relics?
4.     Have you ever seen it?
Step II. Warming—up (3)
Activity: Pictures discussion on the screen.
1.     Show Ss three pictures (The Pyramids in Egypt, The Great Wall, the Stonehenge) and ask Ss to tell what they know about them.
2.     If you have a chance to travel, which one would you like to visit most ? Why?
3.     Questions:
1)     Do you think it necessary to spend so much money to protect cultural relics?
2)     Why is it important to protect them?
3)     What do you think we can do to protect our cultural relics?
4)     Which places in Guangzhou do you think can be cultural relics in future?

Step III. Listening (20)

Activity:
1.     Listen to the description of the three cultural sites. Complete the map on P43.
2.     Listen to the tape three times if necessary. The Check the information with the Ss.
1)     Listen for the first time, let Ss get the three names of the site.
2)     Listen for the second time, let Ss find out why it is important.
3)     Listen for the last time, let Ss find out what is being done to protect it.

The winter Palace
It tells us about how people lived in the past.
 
Visitors are not allowed to go inside;
They can look at pictures in a small museum.

The Sunshine Temple
Part of our history;
Many important things happened here;     
Many poems have been written
Build a wall between the lake and the temple;
Move things to a museum.

Mt Lu Shan
Part of China’s history;
Many important people have been there.
Try to limit the number of cars on the mountain;
Try to use more buses.
 
**( Ss will find it easy to finish the first task , but quite difficult to finish the following two tasks. T will ask Ss to listen to the sentences part by part and try to guide Ss to the key sentences, then let Ss do pair work to see if they can find the key words, finally T check the answers and show the key words on the screen)
If the Ss are interested, have a further discussion about the three sites.
3.     Complete the three pictures on P44. If necessary, play the tape again.
Picture 1. Put the statues in the right place.
Picture 2. Put the temple and the museum in the right place.
Picture 3. Put the Moon Tower in the right place.
(Ss can finish this task easily and quickly)
Purpose:
1.     To make Ss get certain information about the sites by listening , and improve Ss’ listening ability.
2.     To make Ss imagine the whole pictures according to the listening material and present the information they get .
3.     To make Ss realize the importance of protecting cultural relics.
Step IV. Discussion(15)
Activity: Discussion
1. Background(背景):
  You live in a small village. Near the village, there is a very old temple. Some businessmen want to build new houses where the temple stands. Some villagers agree with the businessmen while others don’t agree.
  Today, we invite a famous host and some experts to have a discussion together.
   (T devide the class into groups of four, asking each S to act as the role of an Expert, or a Businessman or Villager A or Villager B. Ss make a debate about whether they should protect the temple or build houses, according to the key words the T give.)
   2. Group work:
  A debate:
Protect the temple    VS     Build houses
   Expert                    businessman
   Villager A                 Villager B
    (important, long history,        ( waste place, make more money,
       valuable, knowledge,…        have more houses ,
more visitors,                  develop the village …)

3. summary:
   To reach an conclusion that cultural relics must be protected by everyone.
Step V. Consolidation
  In this lesson, we’ve done some listening practice about some cultural sites. By listening to it, we’ve realized it is quite important to protect them. We should do our best to protect them. .

Step VI. Homework  (1)

Task: As is known to us all, China is a country with a history of more than 5,000 years. In the long history, people in different periods have left us quite a number of cultural sites, many of which are world-famous.
Prepare a brief description of Ss’ favorite cultural site in China. The report must include the following:
1)The name of the site      
2)Its size as well as its history
3) Its importance and what is being done to protect it.(Better surf on the Internet)
