[应用] To use the key words, phrases and sentence structures to make up sentences frequently.

[综合] Words, phrases and sentence structures.

[探究]Some sentence structures.

Ask students to spell some words and phrases orally.

Hurricane. Fortunately. Strike. Normal. Block. Branch. Lamp. Awake. Plastic. Blanket. Altogether. Surprisingly. Weatherman. Push over. Bring down. Call in warn. Warn sb of /against sth, warn sb against doing sth =warn sb against doing sth

II.Presentaion

A; From last lesson, we`ve learned that a hurricane is likely to happen. The next day, a hurricane really happened.A hurricane is a natural disaster, it can do great damage to peoples`lives and property.today we`re going to read a passage about a hurricane in London. Now please look at the two questions.

1. Why did the hurricane cause so much damage/

2. Who helped to get things back to normal after the hurricane/

B; Now listen to the tape of this passage with the two question.

D;Explain some language points.

1. If the hurricane had happened during the day-time, there would have been many more deaths.

            This grammar point is called the Subjunctive Mood, and expresses a condition in the past which is the opposite of the reality.

            e.g. If you had come last night, you would have had a wonderful time.

                  If you had studied hard, you could have passed the exam.

2. It had been raining heavily for two days.

           This is a past perfect continuous tense.

           Structure; had+been+ving.

        a.to express the duration of action up to a certain time in the past.

        e.g. When she arrived I had been waiting for three hours.(04教育资源网,转载请注明)

 

 b:to express the present perfect continuous in indir(04教育资源网,转载请注明)ect speech./

e.g. I asked “what have you been doing since you arrive in China?”-------

I asked her what you had been doing since she arrived in China?

3. as well as:  and,  not only…but also… .

e.g. She is clever as well as beautiful.

He gave me money as well as advice.

When as well as is used to join two subject, the verb should agree with the first one.

My parents as well as my sister are fond of music.

4. have sth. done

e.g. She had her house repaired. (She organized it.)

I had my hair cut. (I asked somebody else to cut my hair.)

She had her leg broken. (something bad happened  ……had their supply cut off : Have sth. done is used here to mean that something bad happened.

5. awake = not asleep.

Adjectives can be used as adverbials to express accompany

e.g  He stood there , silent (afraid , fall of surprise )

6. They worked long hours for several weeks before(04教育资源网,转载请注明) everything returned to normal.

e.g

   It was a long time before I got to sleep again .

   It will be several several months before he is fit for work

   He finished writing his composition before he went to play football

   It won’t be long before he comes back.

   I had not gone a mile before I felt tired

III. Drill

  Let’s look at the five pictures, which may cover the content of the passage. Now let’s retell the passage one by one , using the key words given . After each picture .I will ask you some question .(04教育资源网,转载请注明)

P1  1) when did the hurricane strike the southeast of England

2) what was the wind speed

P2  1) how long had it been ruining

    2) how many trees had been blown down by the high winds.

P3  1) did many people had lucky escapes?

2) what did the family take into a field nearby ?

P4  who was called in to cut through fallen trees

P5  Did the weather report say there would be strong winds, but not a hurricane

IV. Practice .

   Ask two students, suppose one is a woman who escaped from the hurricane, the other is a journalist . The journalist is interviewing face to face the woman to cover the event .

V. Consodilation .

  Do exercise : 1. comprehension : According to the passage to choose the best answer .

3. Homework: fill in the gaps with suitable prepositions
